What does Brexit mean for Me, My Family and Northern Ireland?
This is a touchy topic to some, no more so than the people of Northern Ireland. I have wanted to write this post for several weeks now, but I am not awfully political and didn’t want to make a fool of myself when writing a post like this.
And I feel now is the time to write this post.
If you know some history of Northern Ireland then you will know there has been a thing that has ripped the country apart for decades called The Troubles. Essentially 2 different sides of the community fighting with each other about staying as part of the UK or becoming a United Ireland.
But back in 1998 The Good Friday Agreement meant that we at least had some peace and normality from this chaos and were finally able to start moving forward and creating a better future for generations to come. But now Brexit has thrown this all into serious doubt, and I really question if Northern Ireland was even considered when this whole saga began. It leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
Northern Ireland is currently considered as part of the UK, but what seems to irk a few people here is the complete and utter disregard and distain that politicians in the mainland have for our little country here. It really is baffling that politicians who have never been here, spoken to the people that live here can make decisions because it benefits them and won’t really affect how they live. Even Jacob Rees-Mogg said that he doesn’t need to visit Northern Ireland to understand the issue!
It is ludicrous.
I live on the border with the Republic of Ireland, and I have done so for all my life. If a border goes ahead it will be the ruination of Northern Ireland and throw it back to those dark days that we don’t want to return to. It scares me that my children potentially may have to grow up with this type of future.
Off course this is only my opinion and other people in Northern Ireland will have varying opinions based on their political compass.
But it really hit home when today I read tweets that a comedian, yes, a comedian from Northern Ireland posed to Boris Johnston on Twitter! That comedian is yes, Paddy Kielty. He absolutely hit the nail on the head with each and every one of those tweets to which he replied to Bumbling Boris. (Screenshots of his tweets are below)
This is what prompted me to write this post.
There is such an uncertainty about Brexit and I think that Parliament and the Prime Minister didn’t realise how much of a sticking point out little country would be!
If you were to ask me what I would settle for? Well simple. Leave it as it is! If there HAS to be a border, put it down the Irish Sea. Keep the common travel between North and South of Ireland and keep the borders away, for the futures sake. Just leave it alone.
But this is going to be a long 6 months or so, and Northern Ireland will be talked about constantly for those 6 months so let’s watch this space….
